Halloween at the Day Care

29 Oct

All the kids from Jiya’s daycare had a blast last night at the pumpkin patch. It was more about the jumpers than the pumpkins. So I tried to make some amends to the ignored pumpkins. Posting some pictures. More coming soon!

And this is my personal favorite of all the pictures. I love the expressions on their faces 🙂

They are called hands

Little kids are so fascinated by their hands and feet. And I love to capture that fascination on my camera. Here are a couple of pictures from one such attempt a couple days back.

Cranberry Chutney

21 Oct

Conversation with R one evening after he had been grocery shopping on his own and after I noticed there were some items outside of THE LIST.
Me: What is this?
Him: Cranberries
Me: And what are we gonna do with them?
Him: Eat them, of course!
Me: I’ve never heard of anyone eating fresh cranberries
Him: Havent you seen people eat grapes and also eat raisins? Isnt it the same with cranberries – fresh and dried?
Me: I am not so sure
And the next moment, Jiya had spitted it out and I had wrinkled my nose!
So now we had a boxful of fresh cranberries and nothing to do with them!

But all wasnt lost. Google and some resourcefulness combined, we churned them into a fantastic Cranberry Chutney.

Although it looks hideously red, it tasted delicious. Quick recipe – Throw in cranberries, a few green chillies, sugar and salt into a blender and whip up a mean red! And btw, the cranberries do taste a bit like ‘Karaunda’, if you know what I mean.

Dosas and cranberry chutney, anyone?

Belated Happy 5!

21 Oct

It was a kinda belated anniversary celebration for us, the real anniversary being completely hijacked by my sister’s baby shower. We just decided to postpone it to the following weekend. After all, 5 years of survival deserve something better than mineral water and caffeine free toasts.
We did toast to our Happy 5 with the sparkly but I was more excited about my new LOMO iPhone app. I want to frame this picture and hang it in my kitchen. After all, 5 years is a big milestone 🙂

Whole Wheat Zucchini Bread

4 Oct

I have been bitten by the whole wheat bug and more so in this country where every other food is made out of refined or processed ingredients. Here is a yummy zucchini bread recipe
Ingredients
2 cups grated zucchini(could be substituted with carrots or white gourd)
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 sticks of butter
4 eggs
salt to taste
sugar to taste
1 tbsp baking powder
1/4 cup milk

Method
Mix butter, eggs and zucchini and keep aside. Mix the dry ingredients(flour and baking powder) and add to zucchini mixture. Add salt and sugar to taste. Stir in the milk to thin the batter a bit. Bake in a greased pad at 350 deg C for 30 min. Check doneness with a toothpick or a knife. Cool and serve with a steaming cup of chai. Tastes great!!
