Happy Birthday to my Little Princess

2 Jul

Its been said many times and I’ll say again, they grow up so fast!! THEY REALLY DO. My little baby’s turned three and it does feel like just a few days back she was a tiny furball in my arms. I wouldnt have guessed at that time that this teeny weeny little being is soon going to have a personality of her own. And personality need not be directly proportional to height or age.

Speaking of personality, its simply amazing to see reflections of myself in her at times. Brings about a happy sense of pride, like scoring a brownie point. And my latest high came when she was more interested in reading ‘Little Miss Giggles’ than playing with my iPhone. Dont you just love those moments of parental satisfaction(maybe I am doing something right). And you want to lock them into a little box forever.

I have to admit though that I am doing a lousy job at recording these beautiful moments and being eight months pregnant is no help at all. Some days I have bouts of sudden anxiety that I need to stop these moments from slipping through my hands. Its going to be harder than ever as I realize that soon mommy space and time is soon going to be shared amongst a jealous toddler, a bawling and hungry infant, an ever-increasing list of chores and not to mention a husband and a job. And top it all up with the need for some PEACE OF MIND and SLEEP, of course!!

In short, I am terrified of how much of dysfunction I will be able to handle in the coming months. Inspite of the lurking unknown, its heartwarming to see my toddler wanting to caress and kiss her baby sibling who she cant understand wont stop kicking mommy. I think she is already teaming up with the baby and plotting our downfall. And I am loving it! I cant wait to sweep her up into my arms next month, something that I have missed doing SO MUCH for the past few months, especially on her birthday.

Happy 3rd Birthday to my little, ‘BIG’ girl :-))

Maternity Instincts

13 May

I came clean in my last post about our impending new arrival and now I can vent! And my favorite topic right now is maternity clothes. They are also my least favorite thing and will always be. I know I still have a long way to go before I can get out of them but they disgust me no end. I was at the maternity store and the sales gal at the store was proudly showing off how comfy the clothes were and how she loved wearing them even though she wasnt pregnant. I do not think anyone in their right mind would do such a thing and I am sure they must have drugged her to do it.
During my last stint with maternity, I had to fight the urge to burn them down once I was done.

All the swearing and burning, its those hormones I tell ya!

On a side note, the same hormones also made me create this. Its not a quilt exactly, its a fleece blanket made from left over fabric that I cut out into squares and sewed together.

I especially love the blue elephant with his red ears 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day

6 May

Last night’s conversation at home –
Me(to R): Are you gonna get me a Mother’s Day gift?
R: What do you want? You know its so hard for me to think of something.
Me: Well, I’ve already ordered something for myself so you can relax but you can do something else for me.
R: What?
Me: I would like to just sleep late into the morning. Can you and your daughter just disappear somewhere?
TWO SECOND PAUSE
R: That’s not a gift, it’s blackmail!!
Me: Whatever, I dont care!! :-))

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there!!
(And they say, sleep is overrated!!)

Cranberry Chutney

21 Oct

Conversation with R one evening after he had been grocery shopping on his own and after I noticed there were some items outside of THE LIST.
Me: What is this?
Him: Cranberries
Me: And what are we gonna do with them?
Him: Eat them, of course!
Me: I’ve never heard of anyone eating fresh cranberries
Him: Havent you seen people eat grapes and also eat raisins? Isnt it the same with cranberries – fresh and dried?
Me: I am not so sure
And the next moment, Jiya had spitted it out and I had wrinkled my nose!
So now we had a boxful of fresh cranberries and nothing to do with them!

But all wasnt lost. Google and some resourcefulness combined, we churned them into a fantastic Cranberry Chutney.

Although it looks hideously red, it tasted delicious. Quick recipe – Throw in cranberries, a few green chillies, sugar and salt into a blender and whip up a mean red! And btw, the cranberries do taste a bit like ‘Karaunda’, if you know what I mean.

Dosas and cranberry chutney, anyone?

Belated Happy 5!

21 Oct

It was a kinda belated anniversary celebration for us, the real anniversary being completely hijacked by my sister’s baby shower. We just decided to postpone it to the following weekend. After all, 5 years of survival deserve something better than mineral water and caffeine free toasts.
We did toast to our Happy 5 with the sparkly but I was more excited about my new LOMO iPhone app. I want to frame this picture and hang it in my kitchen. After all, 5 years is a big milestone 🙂

Happy Anniversary Number 5

Whole Wheat Zucchini Bread

4 Oct

I have been bitten by the whole wheat bug and more so in this country where every other food is made out of refined or processed ingredients. Here is a yummy zucchini bread recipe
Ingredients
2 cups grated zucchini(could be substituted with carrots or white gourd)
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 sticks of butter
4 eggs
salt to taste
sugar to taste
1 tbsp baking powder
1/4 cup milk

Method
Mix butter, eggs and zucchini and keep aside. Mix the dry ingredients(flour and baking powder) and add to zucchini mixture. Add salt and sugar to taste. Stir in the milk to thin the batter a bit. Bake in a greased pad at 350 deg C for 30 min. Check doneness with a toothpick or a knife. Cool and serve with a steaming cup of chai. Tastes great!!
